The illustration above shows the path of the thread and the penetration point of the needle. Running or Single stitches are just as the name implies; a continuous line of thread with needle penetrations at various points (penetration distance is set by digitizer). The type of stitch is used mainly for an underlay pattern (which ties the apparel to backing or prepares apparel surface for more stitches to come), very fine and small detail or an outline of a fill or satin stitch area. Satin or Column Stitches are stitches that zigzag back and forth so tightly that they create a column of thread. They are also called Satin stitches because they truly allow the sheen of the thread to stand out. The stitches are used mainly to create special detail, border fill areas and create most lettering.
